Affiliate marketing is both an effective and powerful way to earn money online. The affiliate marketing programs are easy to join and implement. The programs pay a commission on a regular basis, giving everyone a chance to create a profitable business on the Internet.
However, as with all businesses, there are many pitfalls in the affiliate marketing business. Making some of the most common mistakes will cost affiliate marketers a large portion of the profit they are making everyday. That is why it is better to avoid these mistakes at the very beginning, rather than be regretful in the end.
Here’s how to avoid the 3 most common affiliate mistakes:
Mistake #1: Choosing the Wrong Affiliate
Most people want to earn income from affiliate marketing as quickly as possible. In their haste, they tend to choose a product to market that is in demand without considering whether the product appeals to them personally. This is not a very wise move.
In order to succeed, you should take some time to plan your actions. Instead of simply choosing a product that the affiliate program thinks is “hot”, try to choose a product in which you are truly interested.
After choosing a product that appeals to you, do some research about that product to see if it is in demand. Promoting a product that you are passionate about is easier than trying to promote one simply for the sake of the earnings.
Mistake #2: Joining Too Many Affiliate Programs
Affiliate programs are very easy to join. You may be tempted to join numerous affiliate programs in an attempt to maximize your earnings. You may believe that you have nothing to lose by being a part of so many affiliate programs.
Yes, that is a great way to achieve multiple sources of income. However, joining multiple affiliate programs means you must promote them all at the same time. This will prevent you from concentrating your efforts on each one of them.
What are the results? You will not realize the maximum potential of any one of your affiliate programs, and the income generated will not be as huge as you initially thought it would. The best way to get excellent results is to join just one program that pays at least a 40% commission. Then give that program your best effort by enthusiastically promoting your product. When you see that you are making a reasonable profit, you could then choose to join another affiliate program.
The key is to move slowly but surely. There really is no need to rush with affiliate marketing. The future looks quite bright, and it appears that affiliate marketing will be around for a long time.
Mistake #3: Not Buying the product or Using the Service
As an affiliate, your main goal is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service and, of course, to find customers. To achieve this goal, you must be able to convey to the customer the particular product or service. It will be difficult for you to do this if you have not personally tried it yourself. You will ultimately fail to promote and recommend the product or service convincingly. You will also fail to create a desire in your customers to avail themselves to what you are offering.
Try the product or service before you sign up as an affiliate to see if it really delivers what it promises. By doing so, you become one of the credible and living testaments, aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the product or service you are promoting. Your customers will then sense your sincerity and truthfulness, which will prompt them to try it out for themselves.
Many affiliate marketers make these 3 key mistakes and pay dearly for their actions. You will not fall into the same situation if you do everything to avoid making the same mistakes.
Time is the key to success. Take the time to analyze your marketing strategy. Monitor your efforts to make sure you are on the right track. If done properly, you will be able to maximize your affiliate marketing efforts and earn higher profits.

Affiliate Marketing is recommended for the newbie to start their online business. It is recommended widely because it is easy to start affiliate marketing. To start with it is the best way as you need not have your own product or service to offer to the market. Through affiliate market you can promote other peoples product straight away as acting an affiliate for the product owner. The product or the affiliate provider will provide you the promotional tools. There are a lot of affiliate programs on the net which pay income regularly. You can start your online business immediately after signing the affiliate program.
As in other conventional businesses, the success depends on your commitment towards your online business. Commitments means your willingness to succeed and the time you spend regularly for your online business, to monitor and promote it. Like every other business your marketing effort is the core to your online business success. In online business the marketing effort is the volume of traffic you are able to generate to your affiliate site or to your own site through which you are promoting your affiliate product. Affiliate marketing has also its own pit falls. So do not jump into the band wagon without planning. Most affiliate marketers are making some mistakes unknowingly that cost them a substantial portion of their profit. It is better to avoid those mistakes than regretting in the end.
The main mistakes made by the new affiliate marketers:
1.Starting affiliate marketing in a haste
The tendency to earn a quick money is the prime reason for the failure of most of the marketers. In their haste to earn quick money they tend to choose a bandwagon product. Choosing a product or service you are passionate about is the most important thing before starting your online business. Analyze the market demand for the niche product. It is easy to promote a product you are liking, than a bandwagon product.
2.Promoting too many products
As said above, the desire to become rich in a short period, lures many to promote too many products from the beginning itself. The desire is to get income from different sources. Since starting an affiliate program is just like putting a signature, there is no hesitation or second thought in signing for too many affiliate programs. Promoting too many products will take its won toll on your marketing efforts. Clearly keep in mind that your success depends on the volume of traffic you can generate. Putting your action step by step is the best method for effective online marketing. Take one product at a time and focus your full attention in promoting it. There are free and paid marketing sources. Plan your marketing budget according to your budget. After tasting some success in your first product, you can think of joining another program.
3.Not becoming the customer
For an effective presentation of your ads, the words must come from your heart. You should be the first customer to know the product in and out. You should be in a position to clear the doubts and answer the queries of your customer.
The first recommendation of all marketing gurus will be the affiliate marketing, when you ask them for an idea to start your online business. As it is easy to start affiliate marketing, control your temptation to get quick bucks and plan your entry. It is real that affiliate marketing has a huge potential to earn a decent income through your part time efforts. The easiness is its strength as well its weakness. Careful planning and step by step execution of your marketing strategies will bring you real success in your affiliate program.

People who are new to Affiliate Marketing make many mistakes when first starting out and even more continue to make these mistakes as they continue on through out their careers as affiliate marketers. As easy as most people make affiliate marketing out to be, very few will highlight the following DONT’S When marketing your affiliate products:
Here is a list of the 5 Most Common Mistakes Of Affiliate Marketing that will cost you your sales!
1.) Directing Your Lead Straight To The Affiliates Sales Page: (Big No No!)
Why? Simple….Just imagine this…you decide to promote someone elses product, you work your butt off trying to get people to click on your affiliate link, you even pay to advertise your affiliate link, then comes along your potential customer who clicks your link then five seconds later leaves that page for whatever reason. What now? You have basically lost that customer for good and this is not what you want to happen! You have worked hard to get your affiliate link in front of a potential customer interested in the product you are promoting and they left. Now for some reason that potential customer later decides they want to take another look at that website, what do you think they would do? They are probably going to remember the name of the product, either search for it on Google and go directly to the site or type the name of the browser and go to the website. Do you think this potential customer is going to type your affiliate ID or even remember it to start with?
Which brings me to the next mistake which goes hand in hand with this mistake.
2) Doing Affiliate Marketing Without The Basic Necessities (Website, domain name and autoresponder)
I realize most affiliate websites say you can start making money online without your own product, without your own website, without anything at all! Truth is you CAN make money this way but you will be losing more than you make! Do not be scared of having a website! You do not need to create a huge complex site, all you need is a simple 1-5 page website to collect “leads” to build your mailing list. By doing this you can first collect a “lead” (someone who is interested in the niche you are advertising for) and after they are subscribed to your list, you have not lost the possibility of getting this “lead” to buy your affiliate product even if they initially left your page as you can always contact them again with your affiliate link. you can even promote various other products in that niche to them over and over again in the future!
Anyone who isn’t serious enough to buy web hosting, a domain (.com name) and a membership to an auto responder service isn’t likely to make it very far as an affiliate marketer period!
Trust me, you will make back that small investment in no time.
3.) Insufficient knowledge about the product you are offering
There are so many people out there who want to give affiliate marketing a try so they just go out and search for the product with the highest payout and Wham! they hope to get Big sales! Firstly, they have absolutely NO idea what they are promoting because they obviously haven’t bought the product themselves or they have not done any research on the product itself! The people on your mailing list will think you are a joke not to mention if you recommend products that are garbage you are going to lose your credibility and their trust! If you are going to go ahead and recommend a product that you haven’t yourself tried first, then at least do the smart thing and do some research on the product. Read other reviews on that product and see what people on forums are saying about the product, then write your own review on the product before you get it out in front of your leads.
4.) Signing up for too many affiliate programs
If its a bad idea promoting 1 product you know nothing about, then what does it say about you if you are promoting 20 products you know absolutely nothing about? This is just the simple fact! Even if You don’t do your research, people Buying ALWAYS do some sort of research and imagine if just 1 of the 20 products you are promoting happens to be pure garbage? What would that say about the other 19 products you are promoting?
Take part 3 seriously and buy the products you are promoting or at very least read the sales page a few times to learn what this product is going to do for your subscribers.
5.) Not using a proper link cloak to cloak your affiliate link
Please go to this link http://tinyurl.com/234sup5
If you asked me to click on the link above, I wouldn’t! I just would not and I’m sure most people wouldn’t either!
That’s why you need your own domain followed so that you can create a great looking link that everyone will click -well that’s the idea right? :
www.yourdomain.com/ProductName
Firstly, its a great deal more professional and its also easier for people to remember. Also most people tend to dislike affiliate links for some reason. Maybe they think if they went straight to the site, they may get the product for cheaper! So what do they do, they remove the affiliate id from the link and go straight to the product page.
Well there you have it. However, if you really want to know every detail about actually getting affiliate marketing right then you have to get it straight from the Masters themselves. When you talk about affiliate marketing, only 1 name stands out and that is Ewen Chia – The World’s Number 1 Affiliate Marketer.

1. What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a promotion and income generating system where you, as an affiliate marketer, earn a commission for promoting a product or service. The most frequently used payment arrangements include pay-per-sale, pay-per-lead, or pay-per-click compensations. Affiliate marketers generally operate by owning a website where they drive traffic and sales to their represented companies.
For example, if you represent a clothing manufacturer like L.L. Bean you would have a website dedicated to clothing or outdoor wear. Your website could use a number of tools including content with embedded links, banner advertising, and promotional content to encourage your website visitors to click your designated link through to L.L. Bean. Depending on how you’re compensated, if the visitor then makes a purchase at L.L. Bean you are compensated a percentage of the sale.
Affiliate marketing is credited to have been developed by CDNow.com and Amazon.com. Experts were initially critical of the programs however Amazon claims more than 1 million affiliates worldwide.
2. What can I expect to make as an affiliate marketer?
There are many naysayers popping up who say that affiliate marketing is on the decline. However, many affiliate marketers will tell you this just isn’t the case. There is still a tremendous amount of money to be made as an affiliate marketer. How much you make is largely dependent on your compensation agreement, your chosen niche, how much work you put into your business, and your competition. Experts agree that the key to affiliate marketing is to stick with it. Profits will increase as your business and website grow.
3. What are expected start-up costs?
One of the benefits of being an affiliate marketer is that there are very few startup costs. Basic startup costs include a:
• Website
• Domain name
• Computer
• Phone
• Fax/efax
If you already have a computer, then the startup costs are extremely minimal. Other costs will include writing copy for your website. You can write your own copy to minimize these costs. Advertising, including Pay-Per-Click campaigns and placing banner ads in ezines and relevant websites is a great way to send traffic to your websites, however it can be costly. When placing ads or using PPC, consider starting small to keep costs low and test your campaigns to optimize return on investment.
4. What skills do I need to be successful?
To be a successful, and profitable, affiliate marketer will want to have some basic research skills. What are you researching? Plenty! Obtaining the keywords that will generate the most profit, the products that will sell the best and pay well, which advertising and marketing means will work best for your products, and most importantly…who your target market is and what they want.
5. How do I choose affiliate marketing programs?
You can find appropriate affiliate marketing programs online via search engines, by visiting companies you’re familiar with and respect, and by searching affiliate directories. Before you sign up with a company here’s what to look for:
• High quality products and services. Respect your customers and only endorse products you believe in. If you endorse an inferior product, you will lose the respect of your customer. There are thousands of quality companies available, there’s no reason to endorse an inferior product.
• Look at the merchant’s side and make sure ordering and fulfillment processes are handled professionally.
• Ask the merchant about their conversion ratio and investigate their sales copy. Your time, you’re your customer’s time is valuable. You want to send customers to merchants who are able to close the deal.
• Commissions. How will you get paid? Do you get paid per sale or paid per lead?
• Support. All affiliate support will be detailed in the company’s affiliate guide.
• Look for companies that provide sales and marketing materials for you to use in your promotions.
• Tiered Commission. Do you get paid for recruiting affiliates? Some companies pay you if you send them affiliates. This is called a two tiered commission and it can generate tremendous profits.
• Cookies. How long will your cookies last? Generally, most companies offer cookies that last 30 to 90 days. A 60 day cookie means that if your customer visits a company website and then comes back 59 days later and makes a purchase, you get the commission.
6. What is an affiliate network?
An affiliate network is a company that essentially works as the mediator between the company offering the product or service and the affiliate marketer. An affiliate network company will provide sales tracking, click through rates, conversion statistics, and will often issue checks and handle payments.
7. What are cookies and why are they important?
Cookies are small text files set up on a user’s computer. How long they stay on the computer is called the cookie life. If you’re an affiliate marketer, cookies are important because they determine if you are paid for a visitor’s purchase or not. When a visitor comes to your affiliate website, a cookie is placed on their computer. If they then visit the merchant site during the life of the cookie you, as the affiliate, get the commission. If they visit the merchant site after the cookie has expired then no commission is paid. This is why lifetime cookies are valuable to an affiliate marketer.
8. What are text links and why are they important?
Text links are the hyperlinks to the product or service you’re promoting. They only have text in the body of the link, rather than a graphic. They’re generally embedded in your copy. I’m sure you’ve read an article and there are several links scattered throughout. These are text links and they have proven to work significantly better for click through rates and conversions than banner advertisements. Banner ads, while they are still effective, are not as effective as text links.
9. How do I make more profits?
One of the absolute best tools to make profits as an affiliate marketer is content. Advertising is important, a niche market is important, quality products are important, tiered affiliate programs are important, and a portfolio of a variety of products is helpful but the number one tool for more affiliate profits is content. Content drives traffic to your website. Content provides value to your visitors. Content helps your website get ranked on the search engines. Content sells your products and services and drives traffic to the companies you represent. Content gives you profits!
What kind of content works best?
• Articles
• Blogs
• Reviews
• E-books
• Reports
• E-Zines
10. What are banners and why are they important?
Banners are the graphic advertisements you see on many websites. Most companies will provide you with banners of a variety of size, design, and with varying copy. For example, when you join an affiliate program you will often receive an basic affiliate link which may simply advertise the company logo and have the words “Click Here” or “Buy Now.” You’ll also likely receive a promotional banner which may have a discount off of the product, free shipping, or highlight a new product.
Banner ads are excellent resources as advertisements in e-zines and relevant websites.
